Dr. Jen Welter: Leveling the Playing Field for Women

Dr. Jennifer Welter

In today’s episode of Framework, Carson’s Jamie Hopkins and guest host Brodrick Lothringer talk with Dr. Jennifer Welter, first female coach in the National Football League and founder of the Gridiron Girls.

Being considered a disruptor in the sports industry wasn’t something Dr. Jen dreamt about as a child – being a female coach in a male-dominated profession is not exactly the norm. But with her love of football, a master’s in sports psychology and Ph.D. in psychology, she successfully blended her natural athleticism, leadership skills and technical knowledge to set a new industry standard.

Dr. Jen talks with Jamie and Brodrick about the importance of representation, overcoming adversity and the people who advocated for her success.

“There were no women in coaching, especially not at the pro level. So, I never looked and said, ‘I want to do that,’ or ‘I’m going to be her,’ and that’s why representation is so important. It gives us permission to look at the world differently and to see ourselves in those situations. And so I will be very honest and humble in saying that it was not something I set out to do.”
