Leading with Integrity and Building a Culture of Success with Bob McKillop

Bob McKillop

In today’s episode of Framework, Jamie talks with Bob McKillop, head men’s basketball coach at Davidson. Bob started off as a collegiate player (via a failed run at baseball) but found himself wandering a bit after graduation. He made his way to teaching at a high school in New York, where he was also the basketball coach and hasn’t looked back since.

Bob moved up the ranks as a collegiate coach, but he realized early on that winning was more about culture than talent. He created his foundational TCC framework: Trust, Commitment, and Care from that notion.

In this episode, Bob talks about his recruiting mentality, the impact he hopes to leave on his players, Stephen Curry’s time at Davidson, and more.

“No matter how hard you are committed to work, no matter how much you know, unless you care about those people that you are leading, and unless you show that care and make that your optimum goal, you’re not going to advance very far. ~ Bob McKillop

Main Takeaways

  • You can only be effective as a coach if you truly care about the people you’re coaching. You have to make the players your priority at all times.
  • TCC: Trust, commitment, and care. This framework has helped Bob create a culture for his program that is set up for success on and off the court.
  • Recruiting is a lot like hiring. Making sure they fit the character mold of accountability and responsibility is the most important thing – the rest will follow.
  • Trying hard isn’t good enough, just wanting to be great isn’t good enough. You have to be passionate about what you’re doing and about caring for the people you’re working with.
