Tucker Bryant: Unlocking Innovation Through Vulnerability

Poetry and leadership. What do they have in common? More than you might think, says Tucker Bryant. A poet and former marketing manager at Google, Tucker has a unique vantage point. Both poets and leaders must embrace innovation if they hope to release something transformational into the world.

“Poets and leaders have a similar goal in that both want to take the parts of the world that often go ignored or overlooked or seem unchanging,” he says. “There are a number of things poets do to overcome the comfort zones that stand between them and the change they want to see.”

In his talks, Tucker explores what he calls the “Poet’s Keys,” which leaders can use to unlock the doors of change. He also details the barriers standing in the way of that change, such as tradition, perfection or tunnel vision.

Take, for example, technology. While artificial intelligence is recognized as a transformative technology, it’s also viewed with suspicion. But if leaders can harness AI to collaborate with humans within their organizations, it can bring about more creativity.

In today’s episode, Tucker talks to Ana and Jamie about how to step out of your comfort zone, how to overcome anxiety, how to safely expose your vulnerabilities and spoonerisms (you’ll have to listen to find out what these are).

Key Takeaways

  • Curiosity is the willingness to stop what we’re doing and look around in order to find play.
  • Be open to seeing the world not for what it currently is, but what it can be.
  • In most of our lives, we are performers on a stage, whether it’s in our roles as professionals, friends or family members. Step away from the stage every now and then to engage with the most authentic parts of yourself – those parts are often the most vulnerable.

“There is something to be said for the potential synergies between a person and (artificial intelligence) to create art.” – Tucker Bryant
